SHOULD CHRISTIANS ENGAGE IN POLITICS?

should Christians engage in politicsPolitics is the most important subject right now in Nigeria especially now that we are gradually moving towards election, I get agitated when I think about who to vote for even though the candidates from the two leading parties aren’t anything to be excited about. Most people would agree with me that regardless of how important politics is, some people would still decide not to engage in it and when you ask why, they render quips like “I’m not interested” or “I’m a Christian.” So the question is, should Christians engage in politics?
People question the ability of Christians to vote or get into politics because they are supposed to be heavenly oriented and not mind the affairs of the world (Philippians 3:20), some Christians also believe it’s not the right thing to do as Titus 3:9 instructed us saying “But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.” But we must admit to ourselves that before we go to the place where Jesus is preparing for us, we will remain on earth, and how do we make earth a conducive place to live in? By first deciding who would rule our country. Jeremiah 29:7 says “And seek the peace of the city where I cause you to be carried away captive, and pray to the Lord for it, for in its peace you will have peace.”
Most Christians make mistakes by thinking it’s enough to just pray but even the Bible says faith without work is pointless. So yes, its important that Christians vote and contribute into making our country a better place. In Luke 20:21-25, the chief priests asked Jesus if it was lawful to pay tax and in verse 25, Jesus answered them “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” As long as we are on Earth we should continue to do that.
Let’s also remember that in Romans 13:1-7, Paul explained that although there is no authority that exceeds God’s, we should know that whichever authority exists was appointed by God and he went on in verse 7 to say “Render there for all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, custom to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.
So cast your vote, share your views on politics, get into important discussions on how to make our country a better place, pay your taxes and remember that it is important to be truthful while doing this, so whatever the outcome is we can be rest assured in the fact that God is supreme.
