The first reference to being Born again is written in the book of John 3, where a certain man named Nicodemus came to meet Jesus by night.
Nicodemus was a big man in the Jewish society and a member of the Pharisees (a group of religious leaders who were well knowledgeable in the Law of Moses and sought to kill Jesus because his teachings were blasphemous to them, since he equalled himself with God, claiming he is the Messiah). The night hour was preferably chosen by Nicodemus in order not to be spotted. Jesus, in replying Nicodemus told him,
… Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
This compounded Nicodemus’s curiosity to know how a full grown man like himself can be born again.
John 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
In this same chapter of the Bible, Jesus explains exactly what ought to be done before One can be born again.
A quick detour to what being Born again is about. To be Born again in Christian parlance means abandoning a life of sin and committing oneself to living righteous.
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2Corinthians 5:17 AMP Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!
Old things, simply referring to a life of sin.
Galatians 5:19-21 has a number of such sinful acts described, such as Adultery, Fornication, Uncleanness, Lasciviousness (meaning: to be driven by lust), Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, wrath, strife, envyings, murders, drunkenness and so on.
What a life of sin results into is that, they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
SIN is a major barrier between God and Man which was caused by Adam in the beginning of creation.
Romans 5:12 KJV Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Romans 5:12 The Living Bible When Adam sinned, sin entered the entire human race. His sin spread death throughout all the world, so everything began to grow old and die, for all have sinned.
This was the genesis of Sin in the Universe. Man did not have a close relationship with God as before because of sin, until the Law and Prophets came, wherein the One appointed to lead the people was seen as God’s messenger. Make mention of Moses leading the Israelites, Joshua, Caleb, Elijah, Elisha.
The foundational step to become Born again is to believe in the Death, Burial and Resurrection of Jesus which is the core of salvation.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Believing the Gospel is the first progressive step towards salvation. What is the Gospel?
The Gospel is the message of salvation.
1Corinthians 15:1 And now let me remind you [since it seems to have escaped you], brethren, of the Gospel (the glad tidings of salvation) which I proclaimed to you, which you welcomed and accepted and upon which your faith rests, 15:2 And by which you are saved
A man is only saved by believing the Gospel which is the message of how that Christ died, was buried and resurrected from the dead. (Romans 15:3-4, 13-14)
After Believing, the next significant thing to do is Confess your sins.
To Confess is to make a bold declaration of one’s deeds. Confession of sins signifies letting go of a life of sin and receiving the life of Christ.
Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Having believed the Gospel and confessing of sins, the decision henceforth is to renounce a sinful way of living. Remember, old things are passed away. A new creature in Christ is here to stay.
The steps towards salvation is as simple as A-B-C;
Accepting Jesus as personal Lord and Saviour
Believing the gospel, which is the power unto salvation
Confessing of sins.
Newness of Life begins at the point of Salvation and the guarantee of a righteous way of living is Eternal Life.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
