Divine healing is a highly a debated topic. Can you be healed without medicines? Does God truly heal miraculously? Why does He heal some and neglect others?
These are questions plaguing the world and many believers. of course, we can’t answer these questions without referencing the Bible.
What is Divine Healing?
Merriam Webster dictionary defines healing as: “to make free from injury or disease: to make sound or whole. While divine is defined as: relating to, or proceeding directly from God.
Putting both definitions together, we can state that divine healing is to make free of injury or disease through the agency of God or by God.
Divine healing shows that God is involved in the business of reliving individuals of pain that is caused either by sickness or injury. This relief or wholeness would simply be the work of God and nothing else.
Divine Healing: Examining Scriptures
We must first note that health and healing are not the same thing. Health means to be without sickness, while healing is to be made whole from sickness. Healing presupposes that there was an injury or disease.
The first question that we must answer in examining the scriptures on divine healing is whether or not God has stated in His word that He heals.
A look at the scripture and even the most casual reader will readily see that the answer is an emphatic “YES”. One of the earliest references to God’s ability and willingness to heal is found in Genesis 20: 17 –
So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.
In the first book of the New Testament, we see another example:
Matt. 4: 23 – And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
God both from heaven and even in the flesh always healed. In fact a study of the Bible shows that the word heal in all its variants is mentioned 172 times in the Bible. This should convince even the most skeptical Christian that God Heals.
A third scripture to buttress my point is in Acts.10.38 –
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
What Kind of Healing does God Offer
Most times, we expect healing for the physical body, thankfully it isn’t the only form of healing God gives.
So, what kind of healing does God offer? Every type of healing. God is interested in our spiritual, mental and physical health. God has the capacity to heal the brokenhearted as much as he has the capacity to heal cancer. He can deal with emotional wounds, as much he can deal with physical wounds. This truth is captured in the book of Luke:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” ( Luke 4:18-19)
How Does God Heals?
Through prayer! It has been the same way since the beginning, even till now. Remember the first scripture we used to prove that God heals, Genesis 20;17
So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech.
Abraham prayed and God healed. Today, the same thing applies. We go to God and communicate to him for healing through prayer. James helps us to know how to pray this prayer, he says;
And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. ( Jas.5.15 ).
From James, we see that it is a prayer of faith that will save the sick.
The next question will then be what does a prayer of faith sound like? Jesus doesn’t leave us in the dark, and he says this about faith;
Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. ( Matthew 21:21).
From here we see that when it comes to situations such as a mountain of sickness in front of us, a prayer of faith will be speaking to the sickness on the authority of Jesus. We say this believing in the authority that Jesus gave unto all who believe. (Mark 16:15-17) How? A prayer of faith.
Can an Unbeliever Receive Divine Healing?
The answer to this is Yes! How do we know? Firstly, until Jesus came, there were no Christians, yet God caused diverse healing. Secondly, the book of Mark says:
And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover. ( Mark 16:16-17)
Believers have been given the power to heal, and the world is to benefit from such power – believer or not.
We see several examples in the Acts of the Apostles including the man that Peter and John healed on their way to prayer.
Divine healing is God providing health for an individual, making such individual whole. God is ever ready to heal, just like the days of old.
However, God is a sovereign being. He chooses who to have mercy on. He chooses who to heal. He can never the questioned. Today, I pray that the Lord will have mercy of you and make you whole in Jesus name.
