How does God look? Have you ever wondered what the immortal and sovereign God looks like? Or have you ever been asked?
The Bible does not give us any physical description of God. Though there are many descriptions of His attributes. I Tim6-16-17;
He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
God dwells in unapproachable light. So, when you think of Him, imagine an incredibly bright light with God in it. Or better still you can imagine that he is the light itself.
God doesn’t just dwell in unapproachable light, He is the unapproachable light. How do we know this? The Bible states in 1 John:
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
So, Paul and John tell us that God is an unapproachable light. And this can be your answer when next you are asked what God looks like.
Note, though God is indeed an unapproachable light but by his spirit, believers have access to him. We can approach our father, by the Spirit due to Jesus’ sacrifice.
Romans 5 states: Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. – Through him, we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Hebrews 4: 16 also states – Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
God is a consuming fire. Paul and Moses stated this attribute of God in many instances. Now let us do a little speculation: God is an unapproachable light because it is consuming!
How does God Look: The Important Thing
We do not know how God looks like physically. Nobody has ever seen him or documented it. In John 1: 18 Jesus says:
No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
We don’t know how God looks like physically but thankfully we know who He is! We know His nature and what He is as a spiritual being. Jesus is the express image of God and whatever you don’t see in Jesus, it is impossible to see in God.
Hebrews 1:2 states – but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
Another proof that Jesus is a mirror of God was made by Jesus himself in John: John 14: 9 -10
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.
So when next somebody asks you what does God looks like? Your answer should be, He looks like Jesus . In Jesus we see love, compassion, justice, righteousness, and humility.
