What do you know about Christianity?  Whether you are a Christian or not, it is good to know some facts about the most practiced religion in the world.

Christianity is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. The followers of the religion are adherents known as Christians. They believe that Jesus is the Christ, whose coming as the messiah was prophesied in the Hebrew Bible, called the Old Testament in Christianity, and chronicled in the New Testament.

Christianity is basically the largest religion in the world today with over 2.4 billion adherents to the teachings and person of Jesus. We have therefore compiled some interesting facts about this religion that so many people have come to practice:

1. Christianity is divided into three major branches or denominations

There are several denominations for Christianity. However, there are three major ones. These are the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant or Pentecostal. It will interest you to know that about 50% of Christians are catholic. This means that about half the Christians you know see their pope as the supreme spiritual leader.

2. The First Christians were Jews

Today, we have Judaism and Christianity as two different religious systems. However, it is interesting to know that Christianity evolved from Judaism.  Jesus Christ himself was a Jew, with a background in Judaism. All his early followers and disciples who were later referred to as Christians were Jews.

3. Christianity was the Official Religion of the Roman empire:

In 392 AD, Christianity became the official religion for the Roman Empire, thereby ensuring that Christian morals and values formed a defining part of that civilization. This is one of the reasons the church has a huge influence on history. If you check many of the laws and moral values today, you see that they are Christian-themed.

4. The United States of America is the country with the most Christians

The United States of America (USA) has a Christian population of about 225 million people. This is about 75% of their population. This number makes the US the country with the largest Christian population worldwide. The second most populous Christian country is Brazil. Brazil is followed by Mexico. Completing a top 10 list will be Nigeria, Russia, Philippines, Congo, Ethiopia, Italy and Germany.

5. Christ is not the last name of Jesus

This is a rather interesting fact that many people are not so aware of. Christ in Greek simply means anointed one. Hence the suffix is more like a title for Jesus and not his last name.  Many Christians simply use Jesus Christ without knowing what Christ means. Now you know!

6. Jesus was not born on December 25

Despite the popular belief that Jesus was born on the 25th of December shreds of evidence show that he most likely was not. It is impossible to ascertain the exact date of his birth since even the bible is mute on the issue. However, researchers and theologians have drawn inferences from the book of Luke. It says that Shepherds were watching their sheep when Jesus was born, it is therefore inconceivable that they were doing so during winter.  A more reasonable postulation of his birth, taking into consideration his ministry and age at death will be sometimes in April 4 B.C

7. The apostles of Jesus were killed in some of the most vicious manners

Jesus’ disciples suffered death ranging from crucifixion like their master to burning in hot oil. For example, Paul was beheaded in Rome; Apostle John was boiled in oil in Turkey. Peter, Andrew. Simon Zealot and Bartholomew were hanged and crucified. Matthew was stabbed to death somewhere in Ethiopia. Itis interesting to note that Jesus indeed warned his disciples that they will be hated, persecuted and tried for loving him.

8. The Bible has been around for about 1925 year

Ancient Book!  The scriptures were written over a period of about 1500 years. This is from the books of Moses which were written about 1400. BC to the book of revelation which was written about A. D 95. Thus from its completion to date will be about 1925 years.

Since the bible is a collection of books and the first books were written in 1400 B.C, we could positively argue that the bible has been around for about 3420 years. Ancient words!

9. The books of the bible are written by about 40 men of various backgrounds

The bible can be described as a collection or a library of different books by different authors. Some of the authors include Kings (David and Solomon), Lawyers (Paul), Doctors ( Luke), Poets, Shepherds, Fishermen ( John and Peter) Prophets, etc. Paul wrote the most books with 15 books, followed by Moses with 4 books. Samuel and Priest Ezra both authored 4 books each.

10. In about 20 centuries, about 70 million Christians have been killed for their faith

This is not a very positive fact, but it is a fact nonetheless. Christians have/ are being killed worldwide simply because they are Christians. Among the methods used in these killings are beheading, burning in oil, crucifixion, feeding to wild animals, stoning to death and starvation.

11. Christians slaughtered people in the name of Christ for two hundred years

During the period that is known as the crusades, The Roman Catholic Church funded and sponsored the killing of Muslims. Several Muslims were killed in a bit to stop the spread of Islam. They referred to Muslims as pagans and claimed to protect the Holy Land. This is referred to as the dark age by modern-day Christians.

12. A Christian Founded the Red Cross

The International Red Cross was founded by a Christian named Henry Dunant. He formed the organization after seeing the horrors of war. He felt there was a need for an independent body that provided aid and relief during wars. The Red Cross remains one of the most important organizations in the world today.
